Monarchs Soar Past Dayton Flyers in Charleston Classic, 75-67

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Randy Haynes and Ahmad Caver led the Old Dominion men’s basketball team (4-1, 0-0 C-USA) past Dayton (2-2, 0-0 A10) by 75-67 score on Sunday afternoon in the fifth place game of the Gildan Charleston Classic on John Kresse Court at TD Arena.

The Flyers used an 11-5 run to cut their deficit to seven, 54-47, with 10:30 left in the second half. The Monarchs responded with a 16-6 run of their own to take a 70-53 lead with 3:00 minutes remaining in regulation, before ultimately claiming an eight-point victory.

“This was a good win for us today,” said ODU head coach Jeff Jones. "Hopefully our guys leave Charleston with some confidence and realize if we do the things that we need to do we can win some games this season. After the first half against Temple and the loss against Temple, our guys weren’t feeling sorry for themselves and responded really well and played good basketball the rest of the tournament.”

Randy Haynes scored a career-high 25 points on 9-13 shooting to go along with three assists. Ahmad Caver finished with 19 points (7-10 FT) and seven assists. Trey Porter (6-8 FG) had 12 points and four rebounds, while B.J. Stith recorded a double-double, hauling down a career and game-high 13 rebounds and scoring 10 points. Brandan Stith tallied eight points (4-6 FG) and eight rebounds.

For the game, the Monarchs shot 51.8% (29-56) from the floor and 70.6% (12-17) from the free-throw line. ODU held advantages for rebounds (36-23), points in the paint (34-26), second chance points (15-7) and won the turnover battle (9-6). Old Dominion held a lead for 31:47 of the total 40 minutes.

Darrell Davis scored a game-high 27 points for Dayton.

With 1:23 to play in the opening half, ODU took a 39-24 advantage, before the Flyers ended the half on a 5-0 run. The Monarchs claimed a 10-point lead at the half, 39-29, behind a career 19 points from Randy Haynes on 6-10 shooting from the floor, 3-6 shooting from three and 4-4 shooting from the charity stripe. For the half, the Monarchs shot 50% from the floor (14-28) and 50% from three (5-10).

Old Dominion will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 25 against William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. at 7:00 p.m. EST.
