NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University Football game on Saturday against Rice will not only be the 68th Oyster Bowl game, but also the Military Appreciation Game.
Prior to the national anthem, at approximately 1:45pm, a two-plane flyover will take place. First, a World War II era AD-4 Skyraider, that flew out of Chambers Field will pass over, followed by a modern day Grumman C-2A Greyhound that is currently stationed at Chambers Field from Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 40 (VRC-40). One of the members of the C-2A squadron that will be performing the flyover is Alexander Shaw, the step-father of ODU offensive lineman, Eric Magwood.
The executive officer of Naval Station Norfolk, Captain Bradley Rosen, will be present at the game and will be recognized on the field during halftime as part of the Marching Monarch’s halftime show. He will be presented with a jersey patch worn by the team during the game and a game ball signed by Coach Wilder.
The ODU Joint ROTC Choir will perform God Bless America on the field during the third Quarter Break.
The team will wear a jersey patch during the game of the Naval Station’s centennial logo to honor this milestone.
As part of Military Appreciation Day, ODU will be celebrating the centennial anniversary of Naval Station Norfolk, the largest U.S. Navy installation in the world, located just minutes from the ODU campus. The City of Norfolk has hosted more than 30 events over the course of this year to celebrate the anniversary. More than 25 percent of the ODU student body is military-affiliated and more than 2,000 ODU students have served or are currently serving in the military.
