NORFOLK, Va. - Former Old Dominion University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Jeff Capel Jr. passed away on Monday. He was 64.
Capel coached the Monarchs from 1994-2001, and led the Monarchs to CAA Championships in 1995 and 1997, including a win over No. 3 seed Villanova in triple overtime in 1995. Capel had a record of 122-98 at Old Dominion.
“Coach Capel always represented Old Dominion with class and dignity. We had some terrific success on the court when he was our coach. His former players always speak of him as a role model that continues well beyond their playing careers," Current ODU President John Broderick said. President Broderick was a Vice President at Old Dominion when Capel was head coach.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our former men’s basketball coach, Jeff Capel. Jeff was a father figure type of coach who had a great relationship with his players and was genuinely a nice guy. We are thinking of the Capel family at this difficult time,” ODU Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig said.
