CARY, N.C. - The Old Dominion men’s soccer team (7-3-2, 4-0-0 C-USA) fell to the No. 4 UNC (12-2-1, 4-1-1 ACC) Tar Heels in double overtime, 2-1 on Tuesday night in Cary, N.C. The Monarchs went into their third overtime match of the season. 

"I'm very proud of our effort tonight against an excellent North Carolina team. I'm disappointed for our players because they were so close to getting a result," said head coach Alan Dawson

In the first half, the Tar Heels had nine shots over Old Dominion’s two. Mertcan Akar had three saves for the Monarchs.

The match was scoreless going into the second half.

In the 53rd minute, Max Wilschrey tallied a goal after a pass from CJ Taylor and dodging UNC midfielder Martin Salas, putting the Monarchs up, 1-0.

The Tar Heels equalized the game in the 88th minute, Lucas Del Rosario headed the ball into the net past Akar.

In the second overtime, Del Rosario notched his second goal of the game and the game-winning goal.

"We can take many positives from the game and move forward,” said Dawson. 

Mertcan Akar passed his season high saves with 10 on Tuesday night.

Max Wilschrey and Brandon Perdue now both have six goals on the season.

The Monarchs return home in a C-USA match against Marshall at the ODU Soccer Complex on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7PM.
