STORRS, Conn. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team fell to No. 1 UConn, 6-0, in the opening game of Big East play on Friday afternoon at the Sherman Family Sports Complex.

"It's a tough score line and a disappointing result, but it doesn't reflect the flow of the game," said head coach Andrew Griffiths. "We had good periods of play and the overall team effort level was solid. But, we had some lapses in concentration at key times that really cost us."

UConn (6-0) scored five second-half goals to pull away from Old Dominion (3-4), snapping the Monarchs' two-game winning streak. The Huskies' Charlotte Veitner opened up the scoring with a goal in the 16th minute. UConn carried the one-goal advantage into second half, before adding five more goals after the break.

Erin Huffman led ODU with two shots, while goalkeepers Kealsie Robles and Lacey Frazier combined for 14 saves.

The game marked the 23rd time in program history that the Monarchs have played against a No. 1-ranked team. ODU is now 7-16 all-time against No. 1-ranked teams.

"We need to be stronger on the ball in the attacking 25 and circle to turn our possession into quality chances," said Griffiths. "Connecticut is a good team. They slowed the game down and they took their chances effectively."

The Monarchs return to action next Friday against Big East foe Georgetown at 6 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
