No. 20 ODU Falls to St. Francis, 5-3

NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 20 Old Dominion men’s soccer team (2-1-0) falls to St. Francis (2-1-0) by a 5-3 score on Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex in front of 741 fans as part of the 42nd annual ODU Soccer Classic.

In the 45th minute, Lucas Rosa played a free kick in to the center of the box, which found Mario Mastrangelo who headed the ball into the ODU net to give St. Francis an 1-0 advantage into the second half.

At the half, the shot count was tied 4-4, while the Monarchs held a 2-0 advantage in kicks.

Scoring in the second half began in the 51st minute, when a Hans Kroschwitz shot was rebounded from Jimmy Filerman, who scored his first goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1.

Three minutes later in the 54th minute, Niko Klosterhalfen crossed the ball from the left side to Hans Kroschwitz for his second goal of the season, giving the Monarchs a 2-1 lead.

Four minutes later in the 58th minute, Troye Kiernan scored off of a free kick to tie the match, 2-2.

62 seconds later, Lucas Rosa finished a one on one to give St. Francis a 3-2 lead.

In the 62nd minute, Christian Kirchoff played a ball into the left center of the box, which Mario Mastrangelo finished for his second goal of the game and third of the season.

In the 70th minute, Christian Kirchoff made it a 5-2 lead for St. Francis off a shot from the right side of the field.

The match was stopped in the 81st minute for 32 minutes due to lightening in the area.

After play resumed, in the 86th minute, Sebastien Hauret served Tyler Edwards with a shot on the left side of the net for an ODU goal making the final score 5-3 on Friday night in Norfolk, Va.

Old Dominion held a 4-1 advantage for corner kicks for the match.

ABOUT IONA
Iona (1-0) downed No. 24 UConn in its season opener, 1-0, in double overtime last weekend. Josh Plimpton scored the game-winner in the 108th minute and goalkeeper Kellar Sirstins made two saves to help Iona pull off the upset. The Gaels take on VCU on Friday at 7 p.m.before making the trip to Norfolk. 

SUNDAY DOG DAYS
Sundays are now “Dog Days” at all home matches this year for Old Dominion men’s and women’s soccer and field hockey. 

The Sunday Dog Days promotion will allow fans to bring their dogs, on a leash, to any soccer or field hockey game that takes place on a Sunday. There is no charge for bringing a dog. 

During soccer games, dogs will be allowed on the grass area on the south and east sides of the ODU Soccer Complex.

With a $25 purchase of the 2017 Soccer Voucher book, fans receive 20 ticket vouchers that can be used in any combination to gain entry to any men's (or women’s) regular season game at the ODU Soccer Complex.  

The vouchers can be redeemed in any quantity and represent a 75% savings over purchasing general admission tickets at the gate. In addition to entry to the games, the first 200 fans that purchase their ticket voucher books will receive an ODU soccer scarf.
