NORFOLK, Va. – Brandon Perdue scored in the second minute and it was all Old Dominion needed as the men’s soccer Monarchs shut down Oakland 3-0 on Sunday night at the ODU Soccer Complex.
ODU won the VCU/ODU Tournament with a 2-0 mark to begin the season. Ryan McLaughlin, Fox Slotemaker, Sebastien Hauret and Max Wilschrey were named to the All-Tournament Team. Hauret was named the tournament MVP.
The Monarchs started fast as Hauret sent in a corner kick in the second minute that Slotemaker got on net. Liam McQueenie made the save but Perdue slammed home the rebound for the 1-0 lead.
In the 43rd minute, Niko Klosterhalfen took a feed from CJ Taylor and beat the keeper to give ODU a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Monarchs added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute as Max Wilschrey scored off a feed from Lukas Vaiciunas.
Mertcan Akar made four saves in goal for his first shutout with the Monarchs and the fourth of his career.
The Monarchs are back in action on Friday, Sept. 1 when they host Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7 p.m. in the opener of the 42nd Annual ODU Soccer Classic.
