NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team downed George Mason in the 2017 regular season opener by a 4-1 score on Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. Senior defender and co-captain Jackie Stroud drilled home two goals off her head and had an assist, freshman Carla Morich dished out three assists in her collegiate debut, Iris Achterhof scored a goal and had an assist, while Kira Laurento scored a goal on her only shot attempt of the contest.

"It is always nice to get off to a winning start and I’m very pleased to score the number of goals we did,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “George Mason is a good side and when they leveled the game it was a real challenge for us. It was great to see our reaction and come back together in such a strong fashion, that was pleasing. The quality of our goals were good but we also defended well when we had to. There are a lot of positives to take into Sunday."

ODU took a 1-0 advantage after Morich fed Achterhof with a lead pass, before Achterhof beat the keeper on a one on one.

George Mason tied the match at 1-1 in 52nd minute off a Daniela Neves free kick goal from 30 yards out.

The Monarchs responded with three unanswered goals. The first coming off an Achterhof corner kick, which Stroud headed into the back of the Mason net to give ODU a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute.

In the 67th minute, Old Dominion scored off another corner kick, this time it was Morich that served it in to Stroud, who had her shot deflected, only to find Laurento, who cleaned up the rebound, giving ODU a 3-1 advantage.

Stroud scored her second goal of the match, when Old Dominion scored off its third corner kick of the game in the 83rd minute off Morich’s third assist of the game.

Old Dominion’s Krista Moisio was credited with six saves in goal.

ODU’s four goals are the most the Monarchs have scored since Sept. 4 of 2016 in a 5-1 victory over East Carolina.
