NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 55 Old Dominion men's tennis team has been selected to compete in the 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend next season. The Tennis Monarchs will be in a four-team group consisting of No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 46 Vanderbilt and No. 48 Portland. Wake Forest will serve as the host, as the Demon Deacons ended 2017 with the highest year-end team national ranking of the four teams. In all, there are 60 teams participating schools within 15 different groups.
The No. 1 team in each site will face the No. 4 team. The No. 2 team will face the No. 3 team. Two matches are guaranteed - the winners/losers will play the following day (this counts as 2 team dates). The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 16-19, 2018 ITA National Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Washington.
“We are so excited to go to Winston-Salem,” said ODU head coach Dominik Mueller. “Wake Forest has been ranked No. 1 in the country most of the year and won the ACC regular season. To play one of the best teams in the country early in the season will be a great test for our guys. I like this region, because you have two more very good teams in there with Vanderbilt and Portland. Vanderbilt has been great in the SEC for a long time and Portland won the West Coast Conference regular season last year. It will be a fun weekend of great tennis.”
