NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion junior second baseman Jared Young and senior pitcher Adam Bainbridge were both selected on the final day of the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday.
Young was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 15th round with the 465th overall pick, while Bainbridge was drafted in the 30th round by the Kansas City Royals with the 900th overall selection.
Young, a Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball News, led the Monarchs in 11 offensive categories, including average (.367), triples (4), home runs (7), runs (57), stolen bases (9) and OPS (1.021) this past season. The Canada native transferred to ODU prior to the 2017 season from Connors State Community College.
Young's selection marks the third consecutive year that the Cubs have drafted a Monarch. Connor Myers was selected in the 27th round in 2016 and PJ Higgins was picked in the 12th round in 2015. Both Myers and Higgins are currently playing for the Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
Bainbridge, a veteran lefty from Pennsylvania, put the finishing touches on a stellar career in 2017, going 7-4 with a 3.53 ERA en route to First Team All-Conference USA honors during his season. Overall, Bainbridge pitched in 59 games during his four-year career, compiling a 14-10 record with a 3.45 ERA.
Young and Bainbridge join Zach Rutherford, who was selected in the sixth round by the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday, as 2017 Monarch draftees, giving ODU a total of three selections.
The three selections mark the fifth consecutive year that Old Dominion has had multiple players selected in the draft and just the second time since 2009 that three Monarchs were selected. ODU also had three players drafted in 2015.
