Cameron Leads Lady Monarchs In 16-14 Win Over Kennesaw St.

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion lacrosse defeated Kennesaw State 16-14 in a barnburner Atlantic Sun conference game Friday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

Megan Cameron led the Lady Monarchs with four goals, while Cydney Tutchton recorded a hat trick as well. ODU improves to 7-7 on the season and 3-4 in the ASUN, while Kennesaw State falls to 7-8, 3-5.

KSU pulled within one goal of ODU, 15-14, with 5:43 remaining on the clock off a goal by Taylor Catts. Megan Cameron collected her fourth goal of the game with 1:53 to go giving the Lady Monarchs a two-goal lead for the 16-14 victory.

In addition to Cameron and Tutchton’s goals, Megan Topper, Morgan Marrale and Sophia Richie each connected with the net twice. Connor Carson nabbed a goal, as did Katie Miller. Carson, Marrale, Topper and Tutchton each assisted on goals scored by the Lady Monarchs.

Connor Carson became the all-time leader in draw controls with six on the day, a team-high. She needed one to tie the 173 record held by Marlaine Smith.

The two squads traded goals back and forth for the first four minutes of the game. Cameron got the Lady Monarchs on the board first with the assist from Topper. Haley Swift tied the game, 1-1, giving KSU their first goal of the game 25 seconds after ODU’s score.

In the seventh minute a goal by Tutchton, her second of the game, opened the floodgates as ODU went on a 6-2 run throughout the remainder of the first half. The Lady Monarchs held a four-goal advantage over the Owls heading into halftime up 8-4.

Kennesaw State opened the first 12 minutes of the second half with a 7-3 run pulling within two goals, 13-11 of ODU. Cameron scored in the 43rd minute to give the Lady Monarchs a three-goal lead before KSU scored back-to-back goals closing the gap to one, 14-13.

Marrale scored off the Tutchton assist to give bit of insurance for the home team before the visitors from Macon, Georgia, retaliated from Catts putting the score at 15-14. Cameron sealed the deal with 1:53 to go on a free position shot to put ODU up 16-14.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday, April 23, at 1 p.m. as the Bears from Mercer converge on the L.R. Hill Sports Complex for the final home game of the season. The lacrosse program will recognize their six seniors prior to the start of the game.
