FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The top-seeded Old Dominion women's golf team is in first place out of 11 schools after day one at the 2017 Conference USA Championships at the Verandah Club in Fort Myers, Florida. Individually, Maggie Simmermacher is in second of all 55 golfers after the opening round, as the junior from Buenos Aires, Argentina is just a stroke behind frontrunner Jenna Burris (Middle Tennessee).
The Monarchs fired a 289 as a team in the opening round and are just one stroke over par, while second place Middle Tennessee (+4) is in second and UAB (+8) is in third.
Simmermacher, who shot a four-under 68, leads the Monarchs after day one and is in second place, while two other ODU golfers are within the top 10 in Charlotte De Corte (E) and Sana Tufail (+1), who are in fifth and ninth, respectively.
ODU leads all 11 teams in par four scoring average (4.08) and is tied for first in total pars with 59 and for birdies with 14.
Simmermacher leads all 55 golfers in par four average (3.60) and De Corte is tied for the lowest par three average (2.50).
Round two of the three-day event gets back underway tomorrow morning from the Verandah Club.
