NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team held Richmond scoreless in its third match of the spring season, as the Lady Monarchs claimed a 1-0 victory over the Spiders at the ODU Soccer Complex to remain unbeaten in the spring.

“This was a game we grew into and learned quite a bit about ourselves,” explained ODU head coach Angie Hind. “In the first half, we were organized defensively and created some good openings in attack; however, we didn’t have as much possession as we would have liked. In the second half, we stepped the team up and I was so pleased with how we pressed and our use of the ball was so much better. It was great to see Gaby Bentley get her first goal and I thought we looked mature in how we played after that. Richmond is a good team and therefore this result, teamed with how we played collectively was really pleasing for us as a staff.”

Alex Davidson and Iris Achterhof kept the U of R goalkeeper busy, but nobody was able to break the deadlock in first half.

In the second half, Old Dominion applied higher pressure on Richmond and created a few early chances through Kyra Ricks and Cristina Bashara.

The combination of Bashara and Deirdre Bradley set up ODU’s goal, as a Bashara shot broke to freshman Gaby Bentley, who spun inside the box and slotted the ball into the back of the Spiders’ net to put the Lady Monarchs up 1-0.

Krista Moisio (60 minutes) and Erin Davidson (30 minutes) earned their first shutout of the spring, lifting Old Dominion to a 1-0 win over the weekend. On average, the Old Dominion defense is now allowing less than a goal per game (0.67) for the spring.

ODU will be back in action on Saturday, April 15, when the Lady Monarchs welcome Maryland to the ODU Soccer Complex for a 1:00 p.m. EST start.
