NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team played to its second 1-1 draw in its second game of the spring season, this time tying VCU on Sunday night at the ODU Soccer Complex, as Iris Achterhof scored his second goal of the spring against the Rams.
“I was extremely pleased with how we played against a good VCU team,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “In the first half we worked a lot on our defensive organization and while VCU had more of the play, I felt we really limited any real threat they could create in the final third. We looked very solid and together defensively, but couldn’t get as connected in attack so we changed things up in the second half. Our performance in the second half was excellent. I thought we played with great intensity and pressed them very well forcing mistakes which allowed us to be much more dangerous in attack. We should have had a few more goals in this half but to be fair their goalkeeper had some outstanding saves. It was great to see our leadership from central defense and midfield and also some good performances from some of our younger players. Cristina Bashara had a great game tonight and Alex Davidson looked like a real threat in the second half. This was a really competitive game and an exciting one for the great crowd that turned up.”
The first half started competitively but with neither team really created many chances on goal. ODU’s keeper, Erin Davidson, made a few plays off crosses in the box and had a strong first half.
Krista Moisio replaced Davidson for the second half and she pulled off a big save late in the game.
ODU took the lead after 55 minutes of action from a pass from Kathryn Hill and a well-timed run from Iris Achterhof, who slotted the ball into the net, giving Old Dominion a 1-0 advantage.
Chances from ODU’s Alex Davidson, Gaby Bentley, and Cristina Bashara all looked goal bound but VCU’s keeper was able to get a hand on them.
VCU then equalized with 15 minutes left in the match through a scramble in the goal area following a set play.
Old Dominion and VCU played 10 more minutes of extra time; however, neither team scored, ultimately ending the game in a 1-1 draw.
