RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- The Old Dominion women's golf team defeated UNLV on the first day of SDSU's March Mayhem on Monday at The Farms Golf Club. The Monarchs got underway against No. 5 USC in the quarterfinals, but the match was postponed due to darkness.
In the first round of the 16-team match play bracket, No. 9 seed ODU topped eighth-seeded UNLV. Katerina Vlasinova took her match 4&2 over Elizabeth Prior, while Sana Tufail won 2&1 over Mackenzie Ralm. Rachel Walker and Maggie Simmermacher narrowly fell to their opponents, but Charlotte De Corte squeaked past Harley Dubsky to advance ODU into the second round. In the quarters, which were partially postponed until Tuesday morning due to darkness, ODU currently trails No. 5 USC. Simmermacher fell 3&1 to Muni He, while Vlasinova lost 4&2 to Victoria Morgan and Rachel Walker lost one down to Allisen Corpuz. As of Tuesday morning's start time, USC's Gabriella Then is one up over De Corte and the Trojans' Tiffany Chan is two up on Tufail.
The Monarchs will finish the match with USC this morning and will continue on in the bracket afterwards. Due to forecasted rain, the three-day tournament will likely now be completed today with two more rounds of action. There will be a shotgun start for the third and fourth rounds in order to expedite the play.
