BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophia Richie earns her first hat trick of the season as the Old Dominion (2-1) lacrosse team fell 19-6 Saturday afternoon at Virginia Tech (5-1).

Richie led the Lady Monarch attack with three goals on five shots for three points with two ground balls and two draw controls as well as a caused turnover.

Maggi Buckley (2-1) had 12 saves and a ground ball while Lauren Ey saw her first playing time of the season.

Lauren Irvine, Megan Topper and Brook Stein each recorded a goal of their own for the Lady Monarchs. Natalie Ledwitz dominated the draw controls on either side with eight in game and Megan Donohue had two caused turnovers to lead the ODU stat lines.

Virginia Tech had four athletes record three or more goals in the match, led by Tristan McGinley (5). Mary Claire Byrne led the Hokies both in ground balls and caused turnovers with five each.

Three Lady Monarchs scored in the first half with ODU going two-for-two on free position shots. Irvine, Topper and Richie all tallied a goal with the lone assist coming from Irvine on Richie’s goal in the 4th minute of action.

Richie scored twice in the second half on her way to collecting her first hat trick while Stein recorded her first goal of the season. Morgan Marrale and Topper assisted on the final two Lady Monarch goals.

The Lady Monarchs play again on Wednesday, March 1, as they travel to Richmond, Va. for their fourth road game this season. Old Dominion will take on the University of Richmond at 5 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
