NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s basketball team outscored Virginia Wesleyan 53-22 in the second half to claim a 89-55 victory on Friday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, which marked ODU’s final exhibition before the start of the 2016-17 season. All 15 Monarchs played and 12 scored.
Four Old Dominion players scored in double-figures, as both Brandan and B.J. Stith netted 15 points, while Brandan also hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds to complete his double-double. Also in double-digits for ODU were Jordan Baker (10 points, four rebounds and four assists) and Zoran Talley (10 points and five rebounds). Ahmad Caver followed with nine points and a team-high five assists.
Old Dominion held advantages in rebounds (46-23), points in the paint (44-15), bench points (43-11), second chance points (19-2), points off turnovers (18-5) and assists (17-6).
For the ballgame, Old Dominion held VWC to 31.9% (15-47) shooting from the floor and 29.2% (7-24) from deep. ODU finished the game shooting 55.4% (31-56) from the field and 40% (6-15) from three.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by Khory Moore’s game-high 25 points. Also in double-figures for the Marlins was Tim Jones (10 points).
With 10:10 left in the opening half, Old Dominion led the Marlins, 18-15. The Monarchs possessed a 31-27 advantage at the three-minute mark, before taking a 36-33 lead into the locker rooms with them at halftime.
At the half, ODU was led by Ahmad Caver and B.J. Stith, who each scored eight points. Brandan Stith followed with seven points to go along with six rebounds. The Monarchs held advantages in rebounds (24-11), second chance points (11-0) and bench points (15-4). The Marlins were paced by Khory Moore’s 17 first half points.
ODU outscored VWC 31-8 to commence the second half and claim a 67-41 lead with 9:06 remaining in regulation, before ultimately running away to a 34-point victory.
Old Dominion will open up the 2016-17 regular season next Friday. Nov. 11 against James Madison. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. the Ted Constant Convocation Center. This match can be viewed live in HD via C-USA TV.
