NORFOLK, Va. -- Head coach Karen Barefoot and the Old Dominion women's basketball team held its first official practice of the 2016-17 season on Sunday.

"It's finally here," said Barefoot about the upcoming season. "We were working hard today and the energy level was awesome. I'm so excited to go to battle with this team."

The Lady Monarchs return all but one player from last year's squad that advanced to the Conference USA Championship game. Highlighting the returnees are All-C-USA selection and the conference's top scorer Jennie Simms, along with Ije Ajemba and Destinee Young, who both ranked in the top five in C-USA in rebounding.

In less than a month, ODU opens up competition with an exhibition against Davis & Elkins on Nov. 1. The season opener is slated for Nov. 18 against Norfolk State at The Ted.
