BLACKSBURG, Va. – Michael Weindl and Aziz Kijametovic each advanced to the Quarterfinals of the 2016 ITA Regional Men’s Tennis Singles Championships held on the campus of Virginia Tech.
Both Weindl and Kijametovic won their first three matches in singles before suffering their first and only losses.
In the Round of 64, Weindl made quick work out of William & Mary’s Addison Appleby (6-2, 6-0). In the Round of 32, Weindl again won in straight sets over Liberty’s Eddie Gutierrez (6-4, 7-6(1)). In the Round of 16, Weindl took down Temple’s Artem Kapshuk (6-2, 4-6, 6-4). It would be Virginia Tech’s Alex Ribeiro, who would end Weindl’s tournament in the Quarterfinals (6-1, 6-4).
Kijametovic handled Amedeo Blasco of Longwood in the Round 64 (6-3, 6-1). Next, Kijametovic was too much for Duquesne’s Dimitrios Stavropoulos (6-4, 6-1) in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, Kijametovic kept his hot streak alive with a 7-6(6), 6-4 straight set win over Liberty’s Chase Burton. It was Virginia’s No. 69 nationally ranked J.C. Aragone who would end Kijametovic’s run in the Quarterfinals 7-5, 6-2.
Old Dominion will be back in action for the Tribe Invite in Williamsburg on Nov. 4-6th.
