No. 19 Lady Monarchs Fall to No. 4 Duke, 5-1

NORFOLK, Va. -- The fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils used four first-half goals to defeat the No. 19 Old Dominion field hockey team by a 5-1 count Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. Duke improved to 13-2, 4-1 (ACC), while ODU dropped to 6-8, 2-3 (BIG EAST).

Duke got on the board twice in the first 15 minutes of action, as Aisling Naughton scored off an assist from Heather Morris and Alyssa Chillano capitalized off a pass from Margaux Paolino to put the Blue Devils up, 2-0.

In the 20th minute, Ashley Kristen extended the lead to three before Naughton scored again in the 22nd minute to give Duke a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Monarchs answered with a goal of their own just before the half when Megan Byas' shot from just outside the top of the circle was knocked in by Alexa Ostoich, who was credited with her first goal of the season.

At the half, Duke led the shot count, 8-3, while each team attempted three penalty corners.

In an evenly played second half that saw ODU attempt six shots to Duke's five, the Blue Devils added one more late goal in the waning 30 seconds when Alyssa Chillano successfully scored off a penalty corner.

For the game, Duke outshot ODU, 13-9, while the Lady Monarchs maintained a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Kealsie Robles made three saves in the cage for Old Dominion.
