MALIBU- Cali. – Old Dominion’s No. 110 Adam Moundir made an impressive semifinal run at the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters Men’s Tennis Tournament, which included beating two top 15 nationally ranked opponents on the same day at the Malibu Raquet Club. Moundir was Conference USA’s lone representative in the tournament.
“What a run by Adam,” said ODU head coach Dominik Mueller. “Beating two top 15 players on the same day is more than impressive. This tournament should give him and our team a lot of confidence for the season. I'm very happy for him.”
On day one of the Master’s, Moundir took down No. 54 Max Tchoutakian of Baylor in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
On the magical day two, Moundir rallied after dropping the first set 3-6 to No. 9 nationally ranked Arthur Rindurknech of Texas A&M to claim victory in sets two and three (6-4, 6-4) to pull off the upset.
Moundir then rolled over Kentucky’s No. 15 William Bushamuka (6-2, 6-4) in the Quarterfinals.
It was eventual champion, Kentucky’s No. 28 Ryotaro Matsumura, who ended Moundir’s run in the Semifinals via 5-7, 6-7(5) set scores on day three. Matsumura's tournament win places him in the draw for the 2016 National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November.
One of four national championship events on the college tennis calendar, the annual Oracle ITA Masters features 28 student-athletes who earned bids from their respective conferences plus four student-athletes who received wild cards or at-large selections.
