RICHMOND, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's golf team opened its fall season with an 11th-place finish at the Janney VCU Shootout at Tuckahoe Creek Course in Richmond, Virginia, on Tuesday.

True freshman Casper Aneman paced the Monarchs, finishing the 36-hole tournament in a tie for 24th overall (-2). The Sweden native tied for the second-best scoring total (-5) on Par 5 holes.

Antonio Cruz-Conde also registered a top-50 finish, tying for 45th (+4), while David Langley (+6) and Calvin Greschner (+8) rounded out ODU's team score. Newcomer Michael Bakker (+9) was the fifth Monarch competing.

Virginia Tech (-28) won the 14-team tournament, finishing 10 strokes ahead of second-place James Madison (-18). The Hokies' Joey Lane (-10) won the individual title in a sudden-death playoff. Old Dominion (+16) placed ahead of Radford (+20), host VCU (+21) and George Washington (+26).

The Monarchs climbed one spot on the team leaderboard after finishing a weather-shortened opening day in 12th on Monday. The teams were originally slated to play 36 holes in the opening round, but a five-hour rain delay cut Monday's round to 18 holes.

ODU is back in action Sept. 25-26 at the Patriot Intercollegiate in Lorton, Virginia.
