NORFOLK, Va. -- Newly-appointed head coach Dominik Mueller announced the 2016-17 schedule for the Old Dominion men’s tennis team on Wednesday.
The Monarchs made a racket in 2016, compiling a 21-5 record and reaching a season-high ranking of No. 28 in the ITA polls. In Aljosa Piric’s final season, ODU reeled off a 12-match winning streak and ended the season with a run to the Conference USA Championship match, before falling to top-seeded Rice.
Mueller replaces Piric, who accepted the head coaching position at Miami (Fla.).
“There are some big schools on our schedule, such as N.C. State and Clemson from the ACC and South Carolina from the SEC,” said Mueller. “Our guys are going to Ohio State for the ITA Kick Off, so there are a lot of opportunities for the guys. We are also pleased to have the Conference USA Roundup at home too. It will definitely be a challenging schedule, but we are all excited.”
The fall tournament season opens with the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia (Sept. 16-18) and runs through October and November, before concluding with the ITA National Indoor Championships (Nov. 3-6) in New York City.
Following a two-month winter hiatus, Mueller's squad delves into the spring season with a showdown at ACC power NC State (Jan. 14).
The Monarchs then host Richmond and Howard for a home-opening doubleheader (Jan. 15), before traveling to Boston to compete in the Pre-National Kick Off (Jan. 21-22).
The remainder of the spring slate is highlighted by a four-team ITA Kick Off Weekend at Ohio State, featuring Utah and Denver (Jan. 27-29), a trip to the Palmetto State for battles with South Carolina and Clemson (Feb. 10-12), a home showdown against former CAA rival VCU (March 17) and a series of home C-USA matchups in late March.
Middle Tennessee is set to host the 2017 Conference USA Tournament (April 21-23) in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The NCAA Team Championship (May 18-23) and Single and Doubles Championships (May 24-29) are both hosted by Georgia.
