NORFOLK, Va. -- After suffering its first shutout of the season, Old Dominion will look to get back on track on Wednesday night against old CAA rival William & Mary. First pitch against the Tribe is set for 6 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Complex.
The two teams will meet for the 85th time, with the Monarchs leading the all-time series by a 55-29 margin. The contest in Norfolk will be the first of two meetings this season, as Old Dominion makes the return trip to Williamsburg on Tuesday of next week. Last season the two teams split the series, each winning on their home field.
The Baseball Monarchs are currently on a three-game losing streak after suffering their second conference series sweep against Florida Atlantic. Overall, ODU holds a 19-10 record and is 3-6 in Conference USA play.
As a team, ODU is hitting .249 for the season with Will Morgan leading the way with a .333 batting average (9-27). Nick Walker tops the team with 19 RBI, while Kyle Beam and Connor Myers have posted a team high with three home runs. On the mound, Victor Diaz continues to lead the Monarchs with a 2.00 ERA, which also ranks third in the conference. Sam Sinnen also ranks 10th in the league with a 2.95 ERA in 36.2 innings pitched.
In the first NCAA RPI rating of the season, Old Dominion its rated 39th out of 300 teams. The Monarchs are one of four C-USA teams ranked in the top 40, with Southern Miss leading the way in 13th place. Rice (17th) and Florida Atlantic (21st) are also in the top 40. So far this season, ODU has faced four teams rated in the top 50.
William & Mary is set to take on Virginia Tech before facing the Monarchs and is looking to extend its winning streak to three games, and has won six of its last seven games. The Tribe ranks 14th in the nation with 2.42 doubles a game with Charley Gould leading the way with 11 doubles on the season. W&M also ranks 17th in the country with 7.9 runs per game and has had 20 innings this season where the team has scored four or more runs.
Brian Murphy was named head coach of the Tribe baseball program in 2013, and enters his third season as the Tribe's head coach. Murphy helped the Tribe to 22 victories in 2015, and to the program's third consecutive CAA Baseball Tournament, which is tied for the longest streak in program history. Under his guidance six Tribe baseball players were selected to All-Colonial Athletic Association Awards, including Gould and Ryan Hissey, who earned first-team honors. Gould also received national recognition as semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.
