NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion baseball team returns to the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex for a three-game conference stand against the UAB Blazers. Last season, UAB took two from the Monarchs in Birmingham and holds a slight 6-5 edge in the all-time series that began in 1983.
The Monarchs currently own a 25-16 overall record after falling to No. 20 Virginia, 8-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Park. The Monarchs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Cavaliers scored at least a run in the next seven innings, while retiring 20 of the next 26 ODU batters to secure the victory. Old Dominion is currently ranked eighth in the league with an 8-10 Conference USA record and continues its quest for a spot in the C-USA Baseball Championship tournament with four more C-USA series remaining.
This weekend is full of festivities, as Friday marks the third annual “Low Country Boil,” presented by Greek Life, HRL and SGA. The event is free for the first 250 students in the Rally Alley Fan Zone. The weekend also marks the first ODU baseball “Alumni Weekend.” All alumni and friends are encouraged to attend an event in Rally Alley during the game on Saturday with barbeque and drinks. All alumni are invited and are welcome to bring one guest. If you are planning on attending, please email baseball director of operations B.J. Burton at bburton@odu.edu with your name and the name of your guest. Your RSVP gains you access to the game and the event in Rally Alley.
UAB enters the series coming off a three-game sweep of Conference USA foe Middle Tennessee at Young Memorial Field. Freshman starting pitcher Kyle Davis (2-0) earned the win in his first career start as the Blazers (17-22, 9-9 C-USA) picked up their first sweep of the season to pull to 9-9 in C-USA play. The UAB bats contributed 11 hits, four of which came from Brewer Hicklen. Davis retired the first nine MTSU (16-25, 4-14 C-USA) batters in order and exited after five innings of one-hit baseball with a couple of strikeouts on 49 pitches.
