NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion Monarchs are back in action right here in Norfolk for a three game Conference USA series against the UTSA Roadrunners, starting on Friday at 6 p.m. Friday’ game will serve as the Big Blue 5K race packet pickup, while Saturday will play host the Monarchs’ fourth annual Bark in the Park event.
The meeting on Friday between these two teams is the seventh all-time, as the series is tied at 3-3. Last season, the Monarchs went 1-2 against the Roadrunners in San Antonio, while going 2-1 in Norfolk during the 2014 season.
The Monarchs were set to play William & Mary on Tuesday, but due to inclement weather the game was cancelled. ODU did have a big weekend, taking all three games on the road at FIU, winning the final two by eight runs and 10 runs. The trio of road victories raised the Monarchs overall record to 23-10, while evening their league ledger at 6-6. ODU's offense had a terrific weekend, reach double-digits in each outing and scoring a total of 33 runs. The team was also a bear on the base path, stealing 12 bases in as many attempts. ODU was led by a 5-for-5 showing from Walker, while Myers went 4-for-4 on the week.
UTSA enters the contest with a 12-20 overall record and a 3-9 mark in Conference USA after falling to Incarnate Ward 2-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Incarnate Word scored four of its five runs in the final three innings to hand UTSA the loss. Trent Bowles and Ryan Stacy led the Roadrunners with two hits on the day and all but two players in the starting lineup recorded at least one base knock. Starting pitcher Karan Patel took the loss in over seven innings of action. Patel fanned five, issued four walks and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits.
Runners participating in the Big Blue 1K & 5K on Saturday morning are invited to pick up their race registration packets, including their race bib and technical shirt, at Friday’s baseball game against UTSA. Packet pick-up will be located down the first baseline in Rally Alley, and gates open at 4:30 p.m. for runners.
On Saturday, fans can bring their dogs into the game for the only time this season and watch the contest from a special area in Rally Alley that will be reserved for pets and their owners. There will be an ODU dog collar giveaway for the first 250 fans in attendance for their pets. Canine games and a "doggie activities area" will also be available in Rally Alley to entertain all the four-legged guests in attendance. Fans can bring donations for the SPCA and receive a $2 discount off a ticket to the game. Donations accepted include canned pet food, bleach, paper towels, cat litter and detergent. Cash donations will not be accepted.
