NORFOLK, Va. -- After posting a 4-0 record last week, including a series sweep over Conference USA foe FIU in Miami, the Old Dominion Monarchs are back in action in Williamsburg, Va. against the William & Mary Tribe. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at Plumeri Park.
The meeting between these two teams is the second of the season and 86th all-time, as the Monarchs hold a 56-29 edge in the series.
Last Wednesday at the Bud Metheny Complex, the Monarchs defeated the Tribe, 7-1, en route to the program’s 56 win and eighth under head coach Chris Finwood. Nick Walker led the way with a 2-for-2 outing with two runs and one RBI. Turner Bishop also went 1-for-3, which included a double and a team leading two RBIs. Nick Hartman earned the win after pitching a spotless three innings. After facing nine batters, Hartman fanned four and forced three fly outs and two groundouts.
ODU had a big weekend, taking all three games on the road at FIU, winning the final two by eight runs and 10 runs. The trio of road victories raised the Monarchs overall record to 23-10, while evening their league ledger at 6-6. ODU's offense had a terrific weekend, reach double-digits in each outing and scoring a total of 33 runs. The team was also a bear on the base path, stealing 12 bases in as many attempts. ODU was led by a 5-for-5 showing from Walker, while Myers went 4-for-4 on the week.
William & Mary dropped a 6-1 decision in its series finale to UNCW on Sunday at Plumeri Park. With the setback, the Tribe dropped to 15-16 and 4-4 in Colonial Athletic Association. Charley Gould provided the lone offense spark for the Tribe with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. Daniel Powers was hit with his second loss of the season. He tossed six innings, allowing four runs on eights with two strikeouts. Senior Mitchell Aker tossed the final two innings allowing three hits with two strikeouts.
