NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion Baseball Monarchs are back in action this week and are set to take on the defending national champions Virginia on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Davenport Field.
Last season, the ODU defeated the Cavaliers twice, including a 14-5 victory on Virginia's home field. The Baseball Monarchs hold a 32-26-2 advantage in the all-time series since its inception in 1965 and are 3-2 under head coach Chris Finwood.
Old Dominion is coming off three-game series sweep by Rice to move to 18-7 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA action. Despite falling to the Owls, the Baseball Monarchs rank in the top 5 in seven different batting statistics. ODU is first in walks (119), triples (9) and sacrifice flies (13), second in at bats (839), third in total plate appearances (1,005) and is fifth in runs scored (137) and runs batted in (121).
On the defensive end, ODU holds a 4.04 ERA and ranks first in the league in saves (8) and second in runners picked off (8). The Monarchs are also efficient when it comes to double plays, as the team ranks second in C-USA with 26 on the year (1.04 per game). In just conference games, ODU has fielded eight double-plays to lead the league.
After pitching a solid five innings on Sunday against Rice, Victor Diaz continues to lead the conference with a 1.53 ERA in 29.1 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting just .222 against him, which is good for eighth in the league.
No. 20 Virginia enters the matchup with a 17-8 overall record after falling in the rubber game of a three-game series at No. 7 Louisville, 15-0, Sunday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. Tommy Doyle took the loss (1-3), allowing six runs in 4.0 innings of work.
After leading the Virginia baseball program to its first NCAA Championship last season, head coach Brian O'Connor is now in his 13th season as the head coach of the Cavaliers. He holds a career record of 575-209-2 and a 230-126-1 record in ACC play and guided the program to its 12th-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance a season ago. Virginia is one of just six programs in the nation to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament in each of the last 12 seasons.
