NORFOLK, Va. – Head coach Angie Hind and the Old Dominion women’s soccer program have announced the schedule for the 2016 season. The Lady Soccer Monarchs non-conference schedule features seven games, five against in-state schools, two ACC teams and six teams that finished in the top 151 of the final 2015 RPI rankings.
“I like our schedule this year, as I believe it has in many ways a better balance about it that we have had to date,” said Hind. “As we continue to grow, it is essential that our schedule continues to be a strong one and I believe this year we have a great opportunity to put ourselves against quality teams throughout the season and this schedule gives us the ideal chance to really step forward as a program.
Our non-conference schedule is again a strong one with us playing many quality programs in the region and certainly most of the best teams in the state.”
The Lady Monarchs season will open the 2016 season with two exhibition games against VMI at home on Wednesday, August 10at 7:00 p.m. then Towson in Baltimore, Maryland at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 13.
The Old Dominion women’s soccer team will open the first five games of the regular season against in-state foes George Mason, Richmond, VCU, UVA and William & Mary.
First, is George Mason on Friday, August 19 in Fairfax, Va., which will be a rematch from last year when ODU won 3-1. The Lady Monarchs will then remain home to face Richmond and VCU, before they travel to UVA, who finished fourth in the final 2015 RPI rankings, this will be the third meeting between the two schools in as many years.
CAA powerhouse William & Mary and the Atlantic-10’s East Carolina will travel to Norfolk to take on ODU, as the teams finished 31 and 93 in the final 2015 RPI rankings, respectively. The Lady Soccer Monarchs will finish off their non-conference play on the road against the ACC’s Wake Forest, on Friday, September 9.
Old Dominion’s conference schedule features eight opponents in which they faced in 2015 and five teams that were in the C-USA Tournament. Headlining the conference schedule are matchups with reigning conference-USA champs North Texas on Sunday, October 23 in Denton, Texas. Old Dominion will take on Florida Atlantic Friday, September 23 in Norfolk, a team that ODU upset in the quarterfinals of last year’s C-USA Tournament.
“Our C-USA schedule has been altered somewhat in structure which provides good match-ups against some of the best teams in our conference,” stated Hind.
The Conference USA schedule features away games against Charlotte, FIU, Rice, North Texas and WKU, complimenting home games versus FAU, UTSA, UTEP, Southern Miss and LA Tech.
The 2016 Conference-USA women’s soccer tournament will be held in Charlotte, N.C. from November 2 through November 6.
