Freeman Accepts Invite To Play In Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

PORTSMOUTH, VA – Old Dominion University men’s basketball redshirt senior guard Trey Freeman has accepted an invitation to play in this year’s Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (PIT). The nation’s oldest amateur basketball tournament, the PIT will be held April 13-16 in the gymnasium of Churchland High School, 4301 Cedar Lane in Portsmouth, Va.

Freeman earned First Team All Conference-USA honors for the second straight season and led the C-USA in scoring, averaging 22.2 points per game, which ranks No. 11 in the country. He has scored 2,244 points during his collegiate career, while pouring in 778 points this season (pre-Las Vegas Tournament). Freeman was also named to the All-Conference USA Academic Team for the second straight season.

The senior captain from Virginia Beach, Va. ranks No. 1 in the country for made field goals this seaso with 300 and ranks No. 3 in Division I/No. 1 in the C-USA for total points (778). That output improved to 25.3 points per game against conference competition, including five games with 30 or more points against C-USA foes.

Freeman was a three-time C-USA Player of the Week selection, earning the honor three weeks in a row, becoming the first player in league history to accomplish that feat. Freeman reached double figures in all but one game this season.

The most recent Old Dominion players to play in the PIT are Richard Ross, Kent Bazemore, Frank Hassell, DeShawn Painter and Gerald Lee.

Other notables already accepting PIT invitations are Anthony Gill (University of Virginia), Isaiah Miles (Saint Joseph’s University) and Angel Rodriguez (University of Miami).

NBA great Terry Porter will be the featured speaker at the 2016 PIT Celebrity Luncheon, April 15, at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel. Porter played 17 years in the NBA and coached seven years. Tickets go on sale March 25. Tickets are $10 a night (for two games) or $32 for a book of tickets good for all four nights.
