HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- The ODU men's golf team placed fifth behind three top-50 teams among the 18 participating schools at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular this weekend. The Monarchs' David Langley turned in an 11th place finish and Seth Sweet took 18th, as both Monarchs finished ahead of two nationally-ranked golfers.
No. 18 South Florida captured the team title, finishing with a 15-under par performance. No. 39 Texas Tech finished as the runner-up while Campbell, No. 50 Lipscomb University and Old Dominion rounded out the top 50, respectively.
South Florida's 53rd-ranked Chase Koepka grabbed the individual tournament crown. ODU's David Langley was the highest placing Monarch, tying for 11th out of 102 after firing a 74-68-75=217 (+1). Senior Seth Sweet took 18th place after shooting 74-71-75=220 (+4). Calvin Greschner placed 31st, Thomas Henderson recorded a 35th place finish and freshman Nick Rencis claimed 68th.
Both Langley and Sweet finished well ahead of No. 99 Gaston Bertinotti of Campbell who placed 31st, while Langley, Sweet, Greschner and Henderson placed ahead of No. 46 Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech who took 52nd.
The Monarchs finished in a second place tie behind only South Florida for par three average (3.20) and had the fourth-best par four average (4.10) and fourth-most birdies with 39.
Sweet turned in the second-best par three average (2.92), Henderson recorded the third-lowest par four average (3.93) and Langley tied for second-lowest par five average (4.58).
The ODU men's golf team is back in action on Saturday, March 19 at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Virginia.
