RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- Competing in its first tournament of the spring season, the Old Dominion men’s golf team wrapped up The Farms Collegiate Invitational in eighth place. Highlighting the event for ODU was a strong showing by senior Seth Sweet, who claimed a runner-up finish out of 66 golfers in the field.
Individually, SMU’s Ryan Burgess clinched the tournament crown, shooting 70-71-68=209 (-7). The Monarchs’ Seth Sweet finished in a second place tie with Austin Smotherman, also from SMU, as Sweet fired 70-69-72=211 (-5) while Smotherman shot 69-74-68=211 (-5).
SMU captured the team title, San Francisco finished runner-up and UC Irvine and UC Riverside grabbed third place. ODU placed eighth in the final team standings.
Also competing for ODU were David Langley, who tied for 32nd place, Antonio Cruz-Conde, who tied for 50th, Ashton Newsom, who placed 57th, and Calvin Greschner, who took 58th.
Old Dominion finished second in pars with 155 and had the third-lowest par five average (4.92).
Individually, Sweet recorded the second-lowest par three average (2.83) of all golfers and tied for second for most birdies with 15. Antonio Cruz-Conde sunk one eagle and had 34 pars.
