NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior guard Jennie Simms has been named the Conference USA Player of the Week for the second time this season after averaging a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds in two games last week. Awards are chosen by a vote from a panel representing the 14 member schools.
Simms led the Lady Monarchs to a 1-1 week after the team fell in overtime to WKU and cruised to a 22-point win over Marshall. Against one of the best team in the conference and a team that is receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll, Simms put up 28 points to go along with her eight rebounds, four assists and one block. She followed that performance with 22 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season against the Thundering Herd. She also dished out six assists and corralled two steals.
The games marked her sixth and seventh-straight games with at least four assists and the 11th and 12th time she has done that this season. She has scored in double-digits in 21-of-23 games, including a C-USA high of 35 points twice during the year.
Simms still leads the league in overall scoring (19.8) and C-USA scoring (20.6), while ranking eighth in assists overall (4.0) and fifth in C-USA games (4.6). She is one of just three women’s basketball players in the nation to lead their conference in overall and conference only scoring.
The Lady Monarchs are back in action this weekend, as the team travels to league-leading UTEP on Thursday and UTSA on Saturday.
