HAMPTON, Va. -- Brandon Jeske earned three wins via tech fall as the Monarchs went 2-1 on the first day of the 36th Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. Old Dominion, now 4-4 on the season, defeated Campbell and Rider but fell to Arizona State.
The Monarchs opened the day with a 28-16 victory over Campbell. After jumping out to an early lead via a technical fall at 125 pounds from Brandon Jeske, ODU reeled off five consecutive wins including a fall from Alexander Richardson at 149 and major decisions from Devin Geoghegan and Brooks Climmons at 157 and 174, respectively. Freshman Seldon Wright upended Campbell's Paul Duggan by a 6-3 score at 165, and redshirt senior Austin Coburn outlasted Austin McNeil, 3-1, at 197.
In the second round of action, Old Dominion fell to the No. 19 Arizona State Sun Devils, 25-11. After a tech fall win from Jeske and decision victories from Emilio Saavedra and Chris Mecate, Arizona State won seven straight bouts to clinch the dual meet and the Poquoson River Pool title.
Competing in the first round of the Silver Bracket, ODU finished off the opening day of the Virginia Duals with a 26-14 win over Rider. After Jeske earned his third straight tech fall win, Emilio Saavedra defeated Rider's Rob Deutsch, 5-3, and Chris Mecate, Alexander Richardson, Austin Eads and Seldon Wright all secured bonus-point wins for Old Dominion to seal the team victory.
No. 19 Brandon Jeske and No. 5 Chris Mecate each posted a 3-0 mark for the day while No. 8 Emilio Saavedra, No. 6 Alexander Richardson and Seldon Wright all went 2-1.
The Monarchs will close out the Virginia Duals at 10 a.m. tomorrow against MAC foe Kent State.
