LIMA, Peru -- Maggie Simmermacher of the ODU women’s golf team turned in a runner-up finish at the renowned Individual South American Amateur Golf Championship on Sunday in Lima, Peru. The sophomore from Buenos Aires, Argentina shot a 69 in the final round of play to catapult her into second place among 53 of the world’s best amateur players, as she finished the event 73-70-70-69=282 (-6).
“This is a great achievement for Maggie to place so high in such a competitive tournament that features some of the world’s best golfers from all over the globe, Europe included,” head coach Andy Crabtree said. “This performance shows how much she has already improved from her 15th place finish last year. We are really proud of Maggie.”
Finishing only behind Paraguay’s Sofia Garcia, who fired a 75-67-68-71=281 (-7), Simmermacher secured a three-way tie for second place with England’s Bronte Law and Peru’s Lucia Gutierrez. The Lady Monarch finished the four-round event with 52 pars and 13 birdies including four birdies apiece in rounds two, three and four.
Simmermacher will lead the ODU women’s golf team into the spring season from Feb. 28-March 1 at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

The South American Amateur
The Individual South American Amateur Golf Championship began in Guayaquil on 2006 under the Match Play format. After four years of success, the championship got extended to more amateur players from other regions and the game form at change to 72-hole stroke play.
The calendar requires that the host course should rotate between all South American countries and preferably should be complete during the first quarter of the year.
The tournament field consists of two categories, ladies and gentlemen amateur players from each of the affiliated institutions to the South American Golf Federation, and players from countries invited by the organization that meet the requirements and the Status of Amateur player dictated by the R & A.
