BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (4-7, 0-2 MAC) fell to Buffalo, 19-15, on the road Friday night on ESPN3. Earning wins for the Monarchs were Seldon Wright, Jack Dechow, Brandon Jeske, Chris Mecate and Alexander Richardson.
After a scoreless first period at 157, Buffalo's Tim Schaefer used a third period takedown to send the night's opening bout to overtime against ODU's Devin Geoghegan. Schaefer went on to secure both ankles for a match-winning takedown in the first sudden victory period to win, 6-4 OT.
The Monarchs responded at 165, as true freshman Seldon Wright earned three takedowns en route to an 8-4 victory over Tyler Rill to tie the dual meet at 3-3.
The Bulls regained the lead, 6-3, after Muhamed McBryde scored a takedown in the final 30 seconds to defeat ODU's Brooks Climmons, 5-4, at 174.
Fifth-ranked Jack Dechow answered for ODU at 184, dominating Buffalo's Joe Ariola by an 8-1 decision on the strength of two takedowns, two nearfall points, an escape and a riding time point.
Heading into the intermission, Buffalo took a 9-6 lead after James Benjamin clung to a 3-2 victory in the second tiebreaker period by maintaining top control of Austin Coburn for the final 30 seconds of the match. Freshman Jake Gunning increased Buffalo's lead to 13-6 with a 14-3 major decision win over Old Dominion's Andrew Snyder at 285.
At 125, Brandon Jeske improved his winning streak to six with a 4-1 decision over Kyle Akins. The junior from Virginia Beach scored a first period takedown and accumulated over two minutes of riding time to secure the win and narrow Buffalo's lead to 13-9.
After Bryan Lantry of Buffalo received a forfeit at 133, No. 12 Chris Mecate scored a takedown and two nearfall as time expired in the third period to take down Brandon Lapi, 8-1. Alexander Richardson, ranked No. 8, closed out the dual with a 6-0 win over Buffalo's Colt Cotten, but the Bulls held on to win the dual meet, 19-15.
The Monarchs hit the mat again Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. against Kent State in Kent, Ohio.
