WACO, Texas - The No. 56 Old Dominion University men’s tennis team will begin their 2016 season facing No. 49 Oregon at 4:00 p.m. in Waco, Texas. The match is part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, hosted by No. 4 Baylor University who will face No. 68 UC Irvine on Saturday as part of a four-team tournament.
The winners of Saturday’s matches will come back the following day on Sunday, Jan. 24 to play for a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, and the losers will compete in a consolation match.
A total of 60 teams will compete in this years eighth annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend. In order to compete in the tournament teams need to finish the previous season ranked within the top 75.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend sends three visiting schools to a host site for a four-team tournament. The host school faces the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed plays the No. 3 seed. The winner of the four-team tournament will head to the ITA Division I National men’s Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Virginia on Feb. 12-15.
The Tennis Monarchs finished the 2015 season nationally ranked No. 57 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, which is the program’s highest year-end ranking since 2007, when the team was ranked No. 30.
ODU returns all but one starter from the 2015 season, including Adam Moundir who was the 2015 Conference-USA Freshman of the Year.
