NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion (9-8, 2-2 C-USA) will look to take down Middle Tennessee (11-5, 3-1 C-USA) for the first time in school history on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4:00 p.m. EST at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The game will air on television on FOX Sports Network with James Bates handling play-by-play duties and Mike Jarvis taking care of the color commentary.
This preseason, MT was voted to finish third in Conference USA.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES – MT vs. OLD DOMINION
Middle Tennessee is 5-0 all-time against Old Dominion including knocking the Monarchs out of the Conference USA tournament last year in the quarterfinals, 59-52. In the last C-USA regular season meeting between the two, MT won in overtime 68-58 despite Trey Freeman’s game-high 18 points.
LAST TIME OUT FOR OLD DOMINION
Old Dominion had its 32-game home winning streak snapped on Thursday night, as the Monarchs fell in overtime to reigning Conference USA champ UAB, 72-71, at the Ted.
ODU trailed by as many as 11 in the second half, but used a 13-0 run with less than seven minutes remaining to take the lead down the stretch. Denzell Taylor grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a layup with 22 seconds remaining to tie the game at 57-57, and then the Monarch defense forced a miss on the other end to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, the teams continued to exchange baskets, including a series of three-pointers, but it was UAB guard Nick Norton’s put-back layup with just two seconds remaining that proved to be the difference.
Trey Freeman led all scorers with 28 points, while Brandan Stith recorded the first double-double of his ODU career with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron Bacote also finished in double figures with 13 points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS FOR OLD DOMINION
For the season, Trey Freeman is leading the way for the Monarchs averaging 18.1 ppg and 3.4 apg. Aaron Bacote is averaging 15.3 points a contest, while Zoran Talley is averaging 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds. Brandan Stith is netting 8.5 ppg to compliment 8.8 boards per contest, while Nik Biberaj is chipping in 6.0 points per outing to go along with 4.3 boards. Denzell Taylor currently leads ODU with 117 total rebounds (6.9 per game).
Old Dominion is averaging 66.8 points a game, while holding opponents to 60.5 points on 39.2% shooting from the floor and 33.0% from long-range. The Monarchs turn the ball over 9.6 times per game, while forcing opponents into an average of 11.5 forced turnovers per contest.
MEET Middle Tennessee
MT (10-5, 2-1) won its third straight conference game Thursday night at Charlotte, 73-72.
Sophomore Giddy Potts led the Blue Raiders with a career-high 29 points on 9-11 shooting and 7-8 from three while grabbing five boards. Potts’ seven three-pointers was also a season best for the sophomore. Darnell Harris added 12 points while Reggie Upshaw totaled seven points and 13 rebounds.
Upshaw leads the Blue Raiders in points per game with 13.7, while averaging 8.7 rebounds and shooting 54.5% from the floor.
The Blue Raiders have four players averaging in the double-figures in points per game, maintaining 71.7 points per game as a team. The Blue Raiders are 3-3 on the road this season, 1-1 on the road in conference play.
