LANCASTER, Pa. -- Competing unattached at 125, Old Dominion wrestler Steven Simpson earned a first place finish at the Dave Lehman/F&M Open in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Wednesday. The freshman from Leonardtown, Maryland went 4-0 en route to capturing the tournament crown.
Simpson, the lone Monarch competing in the event, got off to a strong start by pinning Maryland's Joey Barber in 1:06 in the opening round. In the quarterfinals, Simpson dominated Ben Smith of Shorter University, 16-2, which was just one point shy of a tech fall. The freshman standout went on to shut out Millersville's Connor Sheehan, 6-0, in the semis before knocking off Millersville's Austin Camacci, 10-6, to claim first place.
After the 4-0 performance, Simpson improved to 17-10 on the year in his rookie campaign. The F&M Open title was the first tournament championship earned by any Monarch redshirt this season.
The ODU wrestling team is back in action on Jan. 8-9 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Virginia.
