NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion women’s basketball head coach Karen Barefoot announced Jennie Simms, Destinee Young and LaQuanda Younger as captains for the upcoming 2015-16 season.
“These three women have all exhibited great leadership ability on and off the court,” Barefoot noted. “They have each demonstrated their understanding of what it means to be a leader in different ways and will help lead our team to success.”
Simms returns as ODU’s leading scorer after averaging 19.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last season. The Conference USA Newcomer of the Year ranked second in the league in scoring, which also ranked in the top-35 in the nation, and fifth in rebounds. She logged double-figure points in all but three games, including a season-high 45-point outburst in the 80-67 win at FIU.
Young averaged 7.1 points and 6.5 boards per outing last year, while leading the team and ranking fifth in the league with 41 blocks. The lone senior on the team, Younger concluded her junior campaign with 93 points and 63 rebounds and helped lead the team to the second round of the WNIT after defeating UVA in the opening round.
After Wednesday’s exhibition against Davis & Elkins, the Lady Monarchs will be back in action in their regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 13 when they take on Richmond at 3 p.m. at the Robins Center.
