ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands -- The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs suffered their fifth-consecutive loss after falling to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Saturday night on the final day of the Paradise Jam.
Destinee Young led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Annika Holopainen added 10 points and two boards. For the game, ODU went 17-for-57 from the floor and 2-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Jackrabbits outrebounded the Lady Monarchs 37-32 and dished out 19 assists compared to ODU’s seven.
The Lady Monarchs opened the game with energy and forced the Jackrabbits into five turnovers and just 21.4 percent shooting from the floor. ODU held SDSU to just 11 points, while connecting on 4-of-14 shots of their own to tie the game (11-11) after the first period.
The second period proved to be a back-and-forth affair as the lead changed hands nine times, but the Jackrabbits were the ones to hold the 33-28 lead at halftime. Both teams picked up their offensive production after combining for 7-for-28 shooting in the first period. The Lady Monarchs hit 8-of-12 in the second after 3-for-14 in the first, while SDSU went 8-for-13 compared to 3-for-14 in the opening period. On Old Dominion’s offensive end, Young led the charge with eight points, while Holopainen chipped in six points.
After a scoreless two minutes in the third period, the Jackrabbits went 5-for-6 and held ODU to just two made field goals to pull away and hold a 47-33 lead over the Lady Monarchs with 4:41 left in the third period. SDSU continued to attack and outscored ODU 17-7 in the third to hold the 50-35 edge over the Lady Monarchs going into the final 10 minutes. Of the Jackrabbits 17 points, 15 came from behind the arc.
The Lady Monarchs struggled offensively in the final period, going 2-for-16 and were held scoreless for over seven minutes. SDSU connected on six three-pointers in the fourth to go toward their game total of 17 to secure the win.
UP NEXT FOR ODU
The Lady Monarchs will return to the Ted Constant Center on Dec. 2, as they take on Loyola (Md.) at 11:00 a.m. for the annual Education Day game. Last season, the fourth annual game marked the first ever sellout at the Ted Constant Center for the Old Dominion women’s basketball team. The crowd of 8,472 is the seventh highest attendance ever in the state of Virginia to watch a regular season college women’s basketball game. The attendance was also the second largest for a Lady Monarchs regular season game ever.
