Mathews, VandePoel Record NCAA B-Cut Times at Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Old Dominion swimming and diving team competed at the prestigious Nike Cup at North Carolina over the weekend.

Monarch senior Reed Mathews highlighted the weekend with a runner-up finish in the men’s 200-yard butterfly, recording a NCAA B Standard time of 1:44.41. The Colorado native also captured ninth place in the 100-yard fly with an NCAA B Standard time of 47.65.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Mathews, Anton Mikaelsson, Jacob Zeidler and Graham Thatcher recorded a fourth place finish (1:22.32) and also swam to 10th place in the 400-yard medley relay (3:19.31).

For the women’s 400-yard medley relay, Colleen VandePoel, Ashley Brem, Mackenzie Payment and Morgan Johnson captured sixth place with a time of 3:46.16. The same relay team placed 10th in the women’s 200-yard medley with a time of 1:44.08.

Individually, VandePoel claimed 11th in the women’s 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA B Standard time of 55.05 and took 12th place in the women’s 200-yard back with a finals time of 2:00.28.

Ashley Brem swam to a sixth place finish in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke final, recording a 1:03.35 finish. Brem also took ninth in the 200-breast with a finals time of 2:17.79.

The Monarchs are back in the pool Dec. 2-5 at the US Nationals at Federal Way, Washington.
