GILROY, Calif. -- After dominating San Francisco State, 33-6, the ODU wrestling team picked up its second dual meet victory of the day at Gilroy High School Saturday evening with a 28-9 win over Cal Poly.
“I thought our team improved from last week, as our philosophy of trying to continually put points on the board was executed better in both dual meets today,” head coach Steve Martin said. “We were able to fight for our positions and score on our feet, top and bottom. This was a great homecoming for Chris Mecate and Emilio Saavedra. We wanted to make sure they got to compete in front of their families and friends in California. This will definitely help us recruiting-wise, as we continue to recruit this talented state very hard. We look forward to wrestling against another top 15 team in UNC at home in 3 weeks.”
Starting at 125, ODU’s Brandon Jeske picked up his second bonus-point win of the day, defeating David Gonzalez by a 14-3 major decision. Californians Emilio Saavedra and Chris Mecate followed up with major decision victories of their own for the Monarchs at 133 and 141, winning 12-1 and 11-3, respectively.
Alexander Richardson picked up his second fall of the season at 149 to extend ODU’s lead to 18-0 before the Mustangs got on the board when Colt Shorts defeated the Monarchs’ Austin Eads, 9-4, at 157.
ODU reeled off three straight wins from 165 to 184, as Seldon Wright and Brooks Climmons picked up 13-6 and 6-3 decisions for the Monarchs, respectively, before Jack Dechow earned his third-straight major decision with a 16-6 victory.
At 197, Cal Poly’s undefeated JT Goodwin won a 3-2 decision over Austin Coburn, and Mustang heavyweight Spencer Empey defeated John D’Agostino, 4-1.
The Monarchs improved to 2-1 on the season with the two dual meet victories on the day while Cal Poly dropped to 1-3.
After a three-week hiatus, the Monarchs will be back in action for their home-opener against No. 14 North Carolina at the Ted Constant Center on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.
