GILROY, Calif. -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (2-1) won nine of ten bouts against Division II standout San Francisco State en route to a 33-6 victory in its first of two dual meets on Saturday at Gilroy High School.
Brandon Jeske set the tone early for the Monarchs, securing an 11-3 major decision before California native Emilio Saavedra earned a 7-6 decision victory on the strength of a riding time point.
Fellow California native Chris Mecate earned an 18-4 tech fall over the Gators’ Joshua Weinberg at 141 to extend ODU’s lead to 12-0, and Alexander Richardson followed up with a 3-1 win over Dylan Furtado at 149. Terrell Forbes kept the ball rolling for Old Dominion with a 4-2 victory over Romeo Medina at 157.
Seldon Wright, Brooks Climmons and Jack Dechow all recorded major decision victories for ODU at 165, 174 and 184, respectively, to propel the Monarchs to a 30-0 lead heading into the final two bouts.
At 197, Austin Coburn was victorious with a 6-1 decision over Calvin Nicholls which improved ODU’s lead to 33-0 before San Francisco State’s 285-pounder Sam Alnassiri earned a fall over ODU's Andrew Snyder at the 4:14 mark.
