NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs will play in the Ted Constant Convocation Center for the first time this season, as they take on Wagner and Miami (Fla.) this week.
ODU will battle Wagner on Sunday at 2 p.m. and follow with a showdown with ACC member Miami on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m., its third contest in five days. The Lady Monarchs enter the week with a 0-1 record after falling at Richmond on Friday afternoon. Keyana Brown led ODU in scoring, setting a new career-high of 15 points in the process. Jennie Simms was plagued by foul trouble and scored just two points in the first three quarters, but came back to tally 10 in the fourth and finish with 12 points. Ije Ajemba was extremely close to recording her first career double-double, as she finished the contest with 10 points (career-high) and eight rebounds.
Wagner completed the 2014-15 season with a 7-22 overall record and return Jasmine Nwajei, the No. 2 scorer in the nation last year at 24.8 points per game. In the season opener for both teams on Friday, the Seahawks fell at ACC member Pittsburgh, 67-41, at the Petersen Events Center. Wagner was led in scoring by 6-2 sophomore forward Sofia Roma, who tallied eight points, on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor, while grabbing five rebounds. Nwajei was held to just six points in her season debut, but pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and dished out three assists.
Eight Hurricanes are back from a team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2014-15. That group includes a trio of starters who are now the team captains: junior guard Adrienne Motley, a Preseason All-ACC selection, junior guard Jessica Thomas and redshirt senior guard Michelle Woods. Miami began the regular season with an 80-67 home victory over Wright State, charging back after falling behind 17-4 and outscoring the Raiders by 26 the rest of the way. Four Hurricanes netted over a dozen points, led by 17 from Thomas.
Both contests will be streamed through Monarch Media on odusports.com. Live stats will also be available and can be found on the ODU women’s basketball schedule page.
