EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Of the 11 Old Dominion wrestlers who competed unattached at the East Stroudsburg Open on Sunday, six captured top-five finishes including true freshman Alex Madrigal, who reached the finals en route to securing second place at 125.
Competing at 125, Chicago-native Alex Madrigal picked up two falls, a tech fall and a 6-0 decision victory before dropping his finals bout to Justin Patrick of Buffalo, 13-6. Fellow Monarch Steven Simpson dropped his opening bout to eventual champ Patrick, 9-4, and then reeled off four victories including a fall in the fifth place bout over Michael Russo of Brown.
At 133, Brandon James picked up three wins before falling in the semifinals to eventual runner-up Zeke Salvo of Brown. The Indianapolis-native then split matches in the consolation bracket to finish in fourth place.
Competing in his hometown, true freshman and Stroudsburg-native Shane Jones powered his way to a third place finish in the 149-pound bracket after storming into the semifinals on the strength of two major decisions and a 9-2 victory. Jones dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to eventual runner-up Steven Galiardo of Brown, but picked up two more wins to claim third.
Also at 149, true freshman Kenan Carter racked up two falls and a 4-3 decision to reach the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Tommy Forte of Buffalo. Carter split matches in the consolation bracket to clinch a fifth place finish.
In the 285-pound bracket, true freshman Andrew Pacheco earned two falls and a 5-1 decision to reach the semifinals but fell to eventual champion Christian Colucci of Lehigh, 6-2. Pacheco split matches in the consolation bracket to place fifth.
Also competing in the event from Old Dominion were Jaquan Loney (1-2 at 133), Delawrence White (4-2 at 141), Devin Geoghegan (3-2 at 157), Ben Schram (2-2 at 157), Blake Sutherland (0-2 at 165) and Connor O’Brien (2-2 at 285).
