HUNTINGTON, W.V. –  The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (7-11-0, 5-4-0) lost a double overtime heartbreaker against  Marshall (13-3-3, 6-2-2) by a 1-0 score at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex on Friday night. Despite the result, the Lady Soccer Monarchs clinched a a coveted spot in the C-USA Tournament next week. Pending Sunday's result: a win would give them the No. 5 seed, a draw would place them as the No. 7 seed and a loss would give ODU the No. 8 seed.

In the 104th minute, the Lady Soccer Monarchs were whistled for a foul, resulting in a Marshall a penalty kick, in which Kelly Culicerto booted the ball into the back of the net, lifting the Thundering Herd to 1-0 double overtime victory.

The Lady Soccer Monarchs and the Thundering Herd played a scoreless first 45 minutes, in which Marshall held a 7-3 advantage in shots attempted and a 2-1 advantage in corners.

The second half featured four Old Dominion shots, while Marshall attempted eight, but neither team found the back of the net for the 90 minutes, sending the match into overtime. The Thundering Herd held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second half.

The match remained scoreless after the first overtime session, which experienced two Thundering Herd shots and one Lady Monarch shot. ODU also fired off the only corner of the opening overtime period.

For the match, Marshall led the shot-count 18-8 and corner kick tally 6-3. Erin Kinz made two saves for ODU, while Lizzie Kish compiled four for Marshall.

Marshall honored seven seniors with pre- and post-match ceremonies on Friday: Kelly Culicerto, Jenna Dubs, Brittany Entz, Taylor Fleming, Lia Foster, Lizzie Kish and Erin Simmons. The Herd class of 2015 is the winningest in program history with 36 victories. Marshall has surpassed program records for total wins in a season, as well as overall victories in conference play.

The Herd is now 2-0-1 all-time against Old Dominion.

NEXT UP FOR THE LADY SOCCER MONARCHS
The Lady Soccer Monarchs will return home to the ODU Soccer Complex on Sunday for a rescheduled match against Middle Tennessee for the regular season finale at 1:00 p.m., which will be the only C-USA showdown of the day.
