SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (7-9-0, 5-2-0) took down the UTSA Roadrunners (1-14-1, 1-7-0) by a 3-2 score on Friday night, after Grace Haverly’s goal in the 102nd minute lifted ODU to its third consecutive conference victory.
After a scoreless first overtime, it took less than two minutes into the second overtime session when Old Dominion’s Thyla Peterson crossed the ball into the box finding Grace Haverly, who headed the ball into the back of the UTSA net, giving the Lady Soccer Monarchs a thrilling 3-2 double overtime road win.
Old Dominion head coach Angie Hind said after the match, "This was very much a game of two halves. We did well in the first half despite the 60 minute break for the storm, as we dominated and scored two important goals. I thought UTSA had the better of the second half and did well on the break to tie the game up. In overtime, we were excellent and showed great character to come back and win the game with a great delivery from Thyla and header from Grace. This was an important win for us.”
In the 20th minute, ODU sophomore Deirdre Bradley drilled a long shot from more than 30 yards out that bounced over keeper to give the Lady Soccer Monarchs a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Bradley’s third in as many contests as a defender.
Moments later the ref stopped the clock with 23:13 to go in the first half, due to lightning in the area, before play resumed around 9:30 p.m. EST.
At the 32:51 mark in the first half, Grace Haverly fired a shot which was saved by UTSA’s Isabella Sanchez, but only to be rebounded by Old Dominion’s Madison Hogan, who booted the ball into the back on the Roadrunners’ net, giving ODU a 2-0 lead heading into the locker rooms at halftime. The goal was Hogan’s fifth of the season, which is the second most on the team this season.
At the half, Old Dominion held advantages in shots (9-1) and corners (3-0).
The Roadrunners cut their deficit in half at the 53:50 mark, when Brianna Livecchi converted on an ODU turnover, placing her shot past Erin Kinz on a one on one, making the score 2-1. The goal was Livecchi’s first of the year.
Less than six minutes later, UTSA leveled the score at 2-2, when Kauwela Neal scored a goal to the left side of the net from 30 yards out, which was Neal’s second goal of the season, forcing overtime in San Antonio on Friday night.
For the match, Old Dominion outshot the Roadrunners 15-7, and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks. ODU’s Erin Kinz compiled five saves in the winning effort.
