BLACKSBURG, Va. – Old Dominion’s Adam Moundir and Aziz Kijametovic proved to be unbeatable in the 2015 ITA Atlantic Regional Doubles Championship, as they punched their ticket on Tuesday afternoon to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. held on Nov. 12-15. ODU sophomore Adam Moundir also claimed second place in the regional singles tournament on Tuesday.

In the regional championship, ODU’s No. 6 seeded Moundir and Kijametovic squared-off against Virginia Tech’s No. 5 seeded Amerigo Contini and Edoardo Tessaro. The format for the finals was a best two out of three, in which Moundir and Kijametovic fell in the first set, 2-6. In the second set, it was ODU’s duo rising to the occasion, claiming a 6-4 victory and forcing a third set. Back and forth the two tandems went, before Moundir and Kijametovic edged out Contini and Tessaro via a 10-8 score.

No. 9 seeded Adam Moundir also advanced all the way to the finals for singles as well, and took on Virginia Tech’s No. 4 seeded Joao Monteiro for the regional crown. Monteiro, the two-time All-ACC performer, went up 3-0 early in the opening set, but Moundir answered with three straight games to tie it up. Monteiro then reeled off three straight points to claim the first set, 6-3.

The two battled again in the second set with Monteiro jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Moundir fought back, winning three consecutive games to go up 4-3. Monteiro and Moundir traded points on serve to tie it up at 6-6, forcing the tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Moundir led early at 2-1, but Monteiro broke back-to-back serves to go up 3-2. The two were tied again at 4-4, but Monteiro scored three straight to secure the win 7-6 (7-4) and ultimately advance to the National Indoor Championships in New York in November. Montiero was ranked No. 70 in the ITA Preseason Rankings.

In the upcoming weeks, Moundir and Kijametovic will find out their draw for the national tournament. Please visit www.odusports.com for the latest news and information.
