CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Old Dominion women's rowing team opened its 2015-16 season with a top-10 finish at the 51st Annual Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday.

"This was a great effort by the team today," said head coach Daniel Garbutt. "I'm excited to see how far this group can develop."

The Lady Monarchs' Varsity Eight boat placed 10th in the Women's Club Eight race, finishing the 4800-meter Charles River course in a time of 17:50.441. Brown University won the 38-boat race in a time of 17:09.583, with Radcliffe following in second (17:16.193) and Riverside placing third (17:22.207). Northeastern (4th, 17:35.254) and Fordham (5th, 17:36.828) rounded out the top five.

With the 10th-place finish, ODU finished ahead of several of the nation's top rowing programs, including Dartmouth (11th), George Mason (15th) and Boston College (16th).

The result is also a two-spot improvement over last year's result, when the Lady Monarchs finished 12th in the same event.
